A guide for caregivers
For parents, caregivers and professionals.
A gentle, grounded resource for the people walking alongside children through family change.
A note from us
The ‘Even When’ series was created to help children navigate the emotional complexity of family change with language that feels safe, gentle, and age-appropriate.
When children experience divorce, separation, conflict between caregivers, or shifting family structures, they often carry emotions they do not yet fully understand. These feelings can show up as sadness, anger, confusion, clinginess, withdrawal, anxiety, physical complaints, or changes in behaviour. Many children simply do not have the words yet, so they communicate what they are feeling through behaviour, play, or their bodies.
The purpose of these stories is not to fix children’s emotions, but to help them recognise, name, and gently move through them with support. Through recurring characters, familiar metaphors, and emotionally grounded storytelling, the series creates space for connection, reassurance, and meaningful conversation between children and the adults who care for them.
Children feel safest when they feel seen. These books are designed to help them feel both.
How to use the books
A flexible companion for everyday moments.
The ‘Even When’ books are designed to meet children where they are. There is no right time or right way to read them. They are gentle enough to read at bedtime, useful enough to bring into a therapy session, and accessible enough to share in a classroom or support group.
Some of the moments these books are designed for:
- at bedtime, as a quiet way to open conversations,
- during moments of transition between homes or routines,
- within therapeutic and counselling settings,
- in classrooms or small support groups,
- or simply as a gentle starting point for difficult conversations.
The stories intentionally avoid overwhelming children with adult detail. Instead, they focus on the child’s internal emotional world, helping children feel seen, understood, and less alone in their experience.
