The story

Lily wakes on Sports Day with a tight, heavy feeling sitting right in the middle of her chest. She hasn’t done anything wrong. But when both Mum and Dad cheer from opposite sides of the field, the questions creep in.

What if it’s my fault? What if I did something to make things go wrong between them?

With Grandma’s gentle help, Lily discovers that the feeling has a name, guilt, and that knowing something and feeling it are different things. The storm between grown-ups was never hers to cause, and never hers to carry.

Warm, quietly powerful, and beautifully illustrated, Even When… It’s not my fault helps children name one of the heaviest feelings that comes with family change, and gently set it down.

What’s inside

The Feelings First Aid Kit

Grandma adds something new to Lily’s kit, a roots cord, a simple tool to hold, squeeze, and release when big feelings arrive.

A coping technique

The squeeze and release technique helps children feel the difference between holding on and letting go, in their hands, their jaw, their whole body.

The roots metaphor

Roots don’t cause storms. They just stay connected and strong. A gentle, visual way to help children understand that their job is to just be themselves.

Reflection questions

Questions to open the conversation between children and the grown-ups they trust, after the story has been shared.

For parents, caregivers and professionals

This book comes with a free companion guide, with guidance on how to use the book, support children through guilt and self-blame, and extend the conversations it opens.
